What advantages does Gibraltar offer for Yacht and Aircraft Registration?

Short answer

Yachts registered in Gibraltar join a British register and fly the Red Ensign, with a public title and mortgage register and no Gibraltar VAT. Gibraltar also has its own register for private and corporate aircraft, using ZD and VP-G registration marks.

Detailed answer

Yacht registration Yachts are registered by the Gibraltar Maritime Administration through the Gibraltar Yacht Registry, a British register whose vessels fly the Red Ensign. As a member of the Red Ensign Group, Gibraltar allows transfers to and from other Red Ensign registers. The registry reports over 900 active pleasure yachts. Who can register a yacht Owners qualify if they are individuals or companies from a British territory, a Commonwealth state, an EEA state or an approved country listed in the Gibraltar Merchant Shipping (Pleasure Yacht) Regulations 1997. Other companies can apply to qualify as a foreign maritime entity. Owners who are not resident in Gibraltar, and have no principal place of business there, must appoint a representative person or registered agent in Gibraltar. The process Steps include an eligibility assessment (for pleasure yachts over 400GT and all commercial yachts), reserving the name for 12 months, proving ownership and legal title, submitting forms, documents and fees, and marking the yacht under a Carving and Marking Note. The Certificate of British Registry is then issued. Full registration runs for 12 to 60 months, provisional registration for three months (extendable to six), and yachts can be registered while under construction. Gibraltar residents with leisure boats under 24 metres can use the simpler Small Ships Register. Advantages of the yacht register The registry points to Gibraltar having no VAT system, the Red Ensign and access to British embassies and consulates, a public register of title and mortgages that gives buyers and lenders security, and the option for yachts over 24 metres to switch between commercial and pleasure registration. Aircraft registration Gibraltar's aircraft register operates under the Civil Aviation Act 2024, with oversight by the Gibraltar Civil Aviation Authority. Regulations published on Thursday 23 April 2026 provide for registration marks beginning ZD-A to ZD-E or VP-G. The register is aimed mainly at turbine aeroplanes of 5,700 kg or more and rotorcraft of 1,000 kg or more. For non-commercial operations, citizens and companies of the UK and its territories, the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland can register, as can owners from other acceptable states who appoint a registered agent in Gibraltar. The registry states there is no annual registration tax or capital gains tax in Gibraltar, but VAT and customs duties may still arise where an aircraft is based or operated.
