What are the best beaches in Gibraltar and how do they differ?
Short answer
Gibraltar's main beaches are Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay on the east side, and Camp Bay and Little Bay on the west. The east-side beaches are sandy, while the western bays are rocky, sheltered and better for swimming off platforms and snorkelling.
Detailed answer
Eastern Beach
The longest sandy beach, near the airport and frontier. Wide, family-friendly and easy to reach, though it can be windy in a Levante.
Catalan Bay
A small sandy beach in front of the old fishing village originally settled largely by Genoese fishermen. Colourful houses, restaurants on the sand and the Rock directly behind make it the most characterful beach. It fills quickly on summer weekends.
Sandy Bay
Beneath the eastern cliffs, restored with replenished sand and protective groynes after severe erosion. Quieter and popular with locals.
Camp Bay
On the west side near Europa Point. Rocky, with sunbathing areas, ladders into the sea and seawater pools. Calmer, clearer water and Gibraltar's main shore-diving site.
Little Bay
A small pebble and rock cove beside Camp Bay, favoured for swimming and snorkelling.
Practical tips
When the easterly Levante wind blows, head to the west-side bays. Lifeguard cover runs in the summer season.
