Where are the best places to watch the sunset in Gibraltar?

Short answer

Europa Point is the best-known sunset spot, with views across the Strait to Morocco and the lighthouse as a backdrop, and the marina waterfront from Ocean Village to Queensway Quay is good for an evening stroll as the light fades. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve closes before sunset for most of the year.

Detailed answer

Europa Point, at Gibraltar's southern tip, is the most popular place to watch the sun go down. It has panoramic views across the Strait to Morocco and the African coastline, the lighthouse makes a good backdrop as the sky changes colour, and the sea breeze makes it cooler on summer evenings. Harding's Battery and the open space around Nun's Well are close by.

For something easier to combine with dinner, the flat waterfront walk from Ocean Village to Queensway Quay passes the marinas and their restaurants, and the lights reflect on the water at dusk. A coastal walk from Rosia Bay to Camp Bay is another option, with time for a swim before the sun sets.

Catalan Bay, on the east side of the Rock, is a pleasant place for an evening meal in the twilight, though the Rock itself sits between the bay and the setting sun.

The Upper Rock is not an option for most of the year. The Nature Reserve closes at 18:15 from October to April (last entry 17:45) and at 19:15 from May to September (last entry 18:45), and only residents and people visiting them may enter after closing. Even in midwinter, sunset is around closing time: on Thursday 1 January 2026 the sun set at 18:17. The Alameda Botanic Gardens are also open only until sunset.

Check the day's sunset time on a site such as timeanddate.com before you go, and bring a layer, as Europa Point can be windy.
