When is the best time to see bird migration in Gibraltar?
Short answer
The peak seasons are March to May and August to October, when birds of prey, storks and seabirds cross the Strait between Europe and Africa. The last week of August and the first ten days of September are especially good for large numbers of raptors.
Detailed answer
Gibraltar is one of the great bird migration crossing points between Europe and Africa. The peak seasons are March to May and August to October.
Highlights by season
- March: start of raptor passage, including black kites, short-toed eagles and Egyptian vultures
- April: the greatest variety of species
- July and August: good seabird watching
- Late August to early September: the best period for large numbers of raptors, including honey buzzards and Montagu's harriers
- October and early November: spectacular finch migration
Where and when to watch
Westerly winds usually give the best raptor watching over the Rock. Good spots include Jews' Gate (home to the GONHS bird observatory), the Summit Ridge, Europa Point and the Botanic Gardens. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve requires an entry ticket.
