Can I drive a Spanish-registered car if I live in Gibraltar?
Short answer
As a general rule, no: a vehicle's registration follows its owner's place of residence, and the Government of Gibraltar has said that a Gibraltar resident should not own a Spanish-registered vehicle. If you move to Gibraltar with a Spanish car, you should formally transfer your residence and then import and register the car in Gibraltar.
Detailed answer
The basic principle
Registration follows residence. The Government of Gibraltar has said that Spanish residents cannot own a G-registered vehicle and Gibraltar residents cannot own a Spanish-registered vehicle.
Why residence on paper matters
Spain looks at your official residence. If you never deregistered from your Spanish padron, you may still be treated as resident there.
Moving to Gibraltar with a Spanish car
- Formally deregister your Spanish residence
- Import the vehicle through HM Customs Gibraltar and pay any Transaction Tax due
- Register it with the DVLD, fit Gibraltar plates and insure it locally
Visitors and frontier workers
Non-residents can bring Spanish-registered cars into Gibraltar temporarily without local registration.
Post-treaty position
The UK-EU Agreement has applied provisionally since 15 July 2026. Confirm current guidance with HM Customs Gibraltar and the DVLD.
