Can I use Uber in Gibraltar?
Short answer
No. Uber does not operate in Gibraltar, and since August 2026 the app ends trips from Spain at the border. Use a licensed Gibraltar taxi or the local buses instead.
Detailed answer
Ride-hailing apps do not operate in Gibraltar. Only vehicles licensed by Gibraltar's Transport Commission may carry paying passengers within Gibraltar, under the Transport Act 1998 and the Transport Regulations 2000. Foreign-registered taxis and private hire vehicles, including those booked through apps in Spain, are not licensed to do so.
Taking an Uber from Spain
In August 2026, HM Government of Gibraltar confirmed that Uber no longer offers trips ending in Gibraltar. The app now ends permitted trips at the border, so you cannot book a ride into Gibraltar and drivers cannot accept or complete one. If you travel from Spain by Uber, you will be dropped on the Spanish side. From there, walk across the frontier, which has had no routine passport checks since 15 July 2026, and take a licensed Gibraltar taxi or a bus.
Enforcement
The Ministry of Transport and the Royal Gibraltar Police have issued fixed penalty notices to drivers of foreign-registered taxis found carrying passengers into Gibraltar, and instructed others to leave.
Getting around instead
Licensed Gibraltar taxis wait at ranks including the frontier, the airport, the cruise terminal and Casemates Square. You can also book through the Gibraltar Taxi Association by phone or through its app. Gibraltar is compact, much of the town is walkable, and local buses cover the main routes.
