Can tourists and visitors get free emergency treatment at St Bernard's Hospital?
Short answer
UK residents visiting Gibraltar can receive emergency and medically necessary treatment free of charge on producing a valid UK passport and their local accommodation address. Other visitors may be charged, and all visitors should travel with medical insurance.
Detailed answer
St Bernard's Hospital on Harbour Views Road runs Gibraltar's only A&E department. Anyone in a genuine emergency will be treated.
UK visitors
UK residents are treated free for emergencies on production of a valid UK passport and their Gibraltar accommodation address. Because some cases are transferred to Spain, also carry a UK GHIC or UK EHIC.
Other visitors
Entitlement depends on nationality and reciprocal arrangements in force. Non-emergency care may be charged, so confirm with the GHA before travelling.
What is not covered
- Repatriation
- Planned or non-urgent treatment
- Ongoing care after the emergency
Travel insurance with medical cover is strongly advisable. A&E uses the Manchester Triage System; for non-emergencies call 111 for urgent advice.
