Can you see Africa from Gibraltar?
Short answer
Yes. On a clear day the Moroccan coast and the Rif mountains, including the peak of Jebel Musa, are visible across the Strait of Gibraltar from Europa Point and from the top of the Rock.
Detailed answer
Gibraltar sits on the northern side of the Strait of Gibraltar, the only sea passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. At its narrowest point the Rock is roughly 14 km (7.7 nautical miles) from the African coast, and the Moroccan shore opposite Europa Point is commonly given as about 21 km away.
The mountain you see across the water is Jebel Musa in Morocco. Together with the Rock it forms the Pillars of Hercules of classical legend.
The two best viewpoints are:
Europa Point, the southern tip of Gibraltar, with its lighthouse, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe and the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque. The Tourist Board describes it as having views across the Strait to North Africa, and it is easy to reach by bus or taxi.
The top of the Rock, particularly O'Hara's Battery at the summit, which looks down over Europa Point and across to Morocco. The Upper Rock is included in the Gibraltar Nature Reserve ticket.
Visibility depends on the weather. Haze, sea mist and low cloud can hide the African coast entirely, so if seeing Morocco matters to you, plan your Europa Point or Upper Rock visit for the clearest day of your stay rather than fixing it in advance.
