Can you walk up the Rock of Gibraltar?

Short answer

Yes. You can walk up from town on roads and footpaths, or take steeper trails such as the Charles V Wall or the Mediterranean Steps. Allow two to three hours for a relaxed climb, and note that you need a Nature Reserve ticket to enter the Upper Rock.

Detailed answer

Yes. With the cable car closed since Tuesday 18 November 2025 for a rebuild, and not expected back until 2027, walking and taxi Rock tours are the two ways up. See the cable car closure for details.

Main routes

  • Via the Moorish Castle: the gentlest option, following Upper Rock roads past the Great Siege Tunnels.
  • Charles V Wall: a very steep stepped path alongside the 16th-century wall.
  • Mediterranean Steps: the most demanding route, starting near Jews' Gate.

Entry and tickets

Enter at the Moorish Castle, Devil's Gap or Jews' Gate. Tickets cost £30 for adults and £22 for children aged 5 to 11, with under-5s free. Red ID card holders enter free. Tickets are valid all day.
