Can I take my dog into Gibraltar’s tourist attractions and the Upper Rock Nature Reserve?
Short answer
Dogs may enter the Upper Rock Nature Reserve at the owner's risk if kept on a lead at all times, but only guide dogs are allowed inside its attractions, such as St Michael's Cave and the tunnels. Dogs cannot travel on the Cable Car.
Detailed answer
The Gibraltar Nature Reserve's admission policy allows dogs into the Upper Rock Nature Reserve at their owner's own risk, provided they are held on a lead at all times. However, guide dogs are the only dogs permitted inside any of the attractions. In practice, that means you can walk your dog along the roads and trails, but someone will need to wait outside with it while others visit St Michael's Cave, the Great Siege Tunnels, the World War II Tunnels or the other attractions.
The Barbary macaques are the main risk. The Nature Reserve warns that they can threaten dogs, so keep well away from them and follow its macaque guidelines. Feeding the macaques is illegal.
Dogs are not allowed on the Cable Car, which is in any case closed for refurbishment and expected to reopen in 2027.
For other attractions, such as museums and the Europa Point Lighthouse, the published visitor information does not set out a dog policy, so check with the venue before you go. Hotels also set their own pet rules.
If you are bringing a dog in from Spain or the UK, it needs to be healthy and have a valid rabies vaccination, with the primary vaccination given at least 28 days before arrival. Beaches have their own rules for dogs.
