Border

Do EU citizens face border checks when entering Gibraltar?

Short answer

EU citizens crossing the land frontier from Spain face no routine checks. Those flying in from outside the Schengen area, for example from the UK, pass a Gibraltar check and a Schengen check, which for EU nationals is carried out through automated border control gates.

Detailed answer

EU citizens may enter and stay in Gibraltar without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. They are not registered in EES and will not need ETIAS.

The Treaty does not give EU citizens an automatic right to live or work in Gibraltar, so longer stays require a Gibraltar residence permit. EU citizens living in Spain can work in Gibraltar as frontier workers.
