What can I see and do for free in Gibraltar?
Short answer
A lot of Gibraltar costs nothing: Main Street and Casemates Square, the Alameda Botanic Gardens, Trafalgar Cemetery, Europa Point with Harding's Battery, the beaches and the waterfront are all free. The Upper Rock attractions need a Nature Reserve ticket.
Detailed answer
Entering Gibraltar itself is free, and much of the town can be enjoyed without buying a ticket. Main Street runs from Casemates Square, a historic square built around the Grand Casemates barracks, through the old town, and is easy to explore on foot.
The Alameda Botanic Gardens, opened in 1816, are free to enter and open daily from 08:00 until dusk. They have walking trails, a children's play park and historic monuments. The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park inside the gardens charges a separate fee (£8 for adults and £5 for children).
Trafalgar Cemetery is free and open every day. It holds graves from the early 19th century, including two men who died of wounds from the Battle of Trafalgar.
At Europa Point, the southern tip of Gibraltar, you can take in the views across the Strait to Morocco and see the lighthouse from outside at no cost. Harding's Battery there is free to visit and displays a restored 12.5-inch rifled muzzle-loading gun, with a visitor centre in the old sunken magazine below it. The landscaped area around Nun's Well, with picnic tables and benches, is also nearby.
The beaches, including Catalan Bay, Sandy Bay, Eastern Beach, and Camp Bay and Little Bay, are free, as are walks along the marina waterfront at Ocean Village and Queensway Quay.
If you want a guide without a fixed price, tip-based walking tours of the old town are advertised online, where you pay what you think is fair at the end.
What is not free: the Upper Rock Nature Reserve ticket (£30 for adults, £22 for children aged 5 to 11) covers St Michael's Cave, the Skywalk, the Apes' Den, the tunnels and the Mediterranean Steps. The Gibraltar National Museum charges £15 for adults, and Europa Point Lighthouse tours are paid.
