What do the different parking bay markings mean in Gibraltar?

Short answer

In Gibraltar's managed parking areas, white-lined bays are free, yellow-lined bays are for residents' permit holders and blue-lined bays are pay and display. Pay and display charges generally apply Monday to Friday 09:00 to 19:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 14:00, with parking free outside those hours and on Sundays and public holidays unless signs say otherwise.

Detailed answer

Bay markings

  • White lines: free parking for everyone
  • Yellow lines: residents' permit holders for that zone
  • Blue lines: pay and display

Gibraltar does not use red bays. Loading, disabled and motorcycle bays are marked and signed separately.

When pay and display applies

Standard hours are 09:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 to 14:00 Saturday. Parking is free outside these hours and on Sundays and public holidays. Some sites have their own hours, so check the signs.

How to pay

Use the meter, or pay online via Gibraltar Car Parks or the QR code on signs. Online payment means no ticket is needed on the dashboard.

Penalties

Unpaid or overstayed parking can result in a Fixed Penalty Notice, and obstructive vehicles can be towed.
