How do Residential Parking Schemes (RPS zones) work in Gibraltar?
Short answer
Gibraltar has four Residential Parking Scheme zones (Zones 1 to 4), each mixing permit-only residents' bays with free, pay and display, loading, disabled and motorcycle bays. Residents living inside a zone can apply to Gibraltar Car Parks Ltd for a permit that lets them park in that zone's residents' bays; visitors must use the free or pay and display bays.
Detailed answer
What the scheme is
The Residential Parking Scheme (RPS) forms part of the Government's Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan. Zones 1 to 4 are live. A permit improves your chance of parking near home but does not guarantee a space.
Bay types inside a zone
- Residents' bays (permit holders for that zone only)
- Free parking bays open to everyone
- Pay and display bays
- Loading and unloading bays, which revert to residents' parking outside operational hours
- Disabled bays
- Motorcycle bays (no permit needed for motorcycles, but they must use these bays)
Who can apply
Residents of the zone holding a Gibraltar ID card or Civilian Registration Card, with no Government arrears, apply to Gibraltar Car Parks Ltd.
Cost
At launch the first permit per household cost £5 per month, doubling for each additional permit. Households with a private garage or space pay the second-permit rate for their first permit. Over-60s have received 50% off the first permit. Confirm current fees with Gibraltar Car Parks Ltd.
Visitors and other zones
Permits cover your own zone only. Elsewhere, use free or pay and display bays.
