Border

How does the 2026 UK/EU Treaty in relation to Gibraltar remove the hard border for people crossing between Gibraltar and Spain?

Short answer

Since 15 July 2026, when the treaty entered provisional application, routine immigration checks and physical barriers at the Gibraltar-Spain land frontier have been removed. Immigration controls now take place at Gibraltar's airport, where arrivals from outside the Schengen area pass both Gibraltar and Schengen checks, after which people can move between Gibraltar, Spain and the wider Schengen area without routine land border checks.

Detailed answer

The treaty provides that physical barriers between Spain and Gibraltar are to be removed under an agreed implementation plan, and routine immigration checks at the land frontier ended on 15 July 2026. Gibraltar does not join the Schengen area, and immigration, policing and justice remain the responsibility of the Gibraltar authorities. Instead, Schengen rules are applied at Gibraltar's external border under a tailored arrangement. Travellers arriving at Gibraltar Airport from outside the Schengen area undergo Gibraltar immigration controls carried out by the Gibraltar authorities and Schengen entry controls carried out by the Spanish authorities. Where physical checks are needed on people arriving by sea, they are escorted to the airport border crossing point. Once cleared, people can circulate between Gibraltar, Spain and the wider Schengen area without routine controls at the land frontier. Visitors from outside the Schengen area, including UK citizens who are not Gibraltar residents, should note that time spent in Gibraltar counts towards the Schengen 90 in 180-day limit. The legal border has not disappeared. Customs rules and security safeguards continue to apply, and temporary controls can be reintroduced where there is a serious threat to public policy, public health or internal security. Travellers should carry documents appropriate to their nationality, and Gibraltar residents should also carry a valid Gibraltar identity card or residence permit.
