How many people in Gibraltar have a degree?

Short answer

About one in three adults in Gibraltar (32.4%, or 10,083 people aged 16 and over) held a degree-level qualification or equivalent at the 2022 Census, more than double the number in 2012.

Detailed answer

The Census groups qualifications by level. Level 4 and above covers bachelor's degrees, postgraduate degrees, Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, and professional qualifications. It was the most common highest qualification in Gibraltar in 2022.

  • Level 4 and above: 10,083 people, up 110.4% from 4,792 in 2012
  • Men: 34.4% of those aged 16 and over (5,293)
  • Women: 30.5% (4,790), up from 16.9% in 2012
  • No qualifications: 22.8% (7,089), down from 31.8% in 2012

Among Gibraltarians, the share with a Level 4 qualification rose from 18.8% to 31.1% for men and from 15.4% to 26.6% for women over the decade.

More young people are going on to higher education. According to the Department of Education, 910 Gibraltar students were studying abroad in November 2022, and a further 154 residents were full-time students at the University of Gibraltar, a total of 1,064, up 39.1% on 2012.
