How does rubbish collection and recycling work in Gibraltar?
Short answer
Gibraltar does not issue individual household wheelie bins. Residents take bagged general waste to communal refuse cubicles or containers, which are emptied in the evenings and overnight except on Saturday night, and sort recyclables into colour-coded street bins. Bulky and hazardous items can be taken free of charge to the Civic Amenities Site or the EcoPark.
Detailed answer
General household waste
There are no individual wheelie bins. Take bagged rubbish to your nearest communal refuse cubicle or container. Collections run in the evening and overnight, with no collection on Saturday night, so put rubbish out on Friday night or keep it until Sunday. Do not use street litter bins for household refuse or leave bags outside cubicles.
Recycling bins
- Yellow: plastics, plastic bags, cans, tins, aerosols, cartons and metal lids
- Blue: paper and cardboard
- Green: glass bottles and jars, lids removed
- Red: household batteries
- Pink: small electrical items
- Orange: used cooking oil in a sealed plastic bottle
Contaminating a recycling bin is an offence.
Bulky and hazardous items
- Civic Amenities Site: Dobinson Way, off Europa Advance Road. Free for households: furniture, mattresses, white goods, electricals, scrap metal, small amounts of rubble, tyres, bulbs, batteries and oil.
- EcoPark: 8 Flint Road, off Devil's Tower Road, for larger quantities of recyclables.
