How do you import a car into Gibraltar and what tax applies?
Short answer
Residents import a car by clearing it through HM Customs Gibraltar, paying the tax due, and then registering it with the DVLD for Gibraltar plates. Since 15 July 2026 the old import duty bands have been replaced by Transaction Tax, levied on vehicles at 15% in the first year regardless of whether the importer is an individual or a dealer.
Detailed answer
Who can import
Residents (or those becoming resident) can permanently import and register a car. Non-residents can bring a car in temporarily.
Step 1: HM Customs clearance
Bring ID, proof of address, registration certificate and invoice. Customs issues a letter with your new G registration number once tax is paid.
Step 2: Tax
Since 15 July 2026, Transaction Tax has replaced import duty. Vehicles are taxed at 15% in year one, rising to 16% and then at least 17%. The taxable amount includes transport and insurance costs.
Step 3: DVLD registration
The DVLD checks standards, may require a test, and issues a Gibraltar Certificate of Registration.
Step 4: Insurance and licence
Insure locally and pay the vehicle licence before driving.
