Residency

How do you qualify for Category 2 residency?

Short answer

You must meet the net wealth requirement, which for new applicants is £5 million following changes announced on 18 June 2026, have approved residential accommodation in Gibraltar for your exclusive use, and not have been resident in Gibraltar in the previous five years. The application fee for new applicants is £5,000.

Detailed answer

Applicants must show net assets of at least £5 million (previously £2 million; existing Category 2 holders are grandfathered), have approved residential accommodation in Gibraltar available for their exclusive use throughout the year, hold private medical insurance, and not have been resident in Gibraltar in the previous five years. The application fee rose from £1,233 to £5,000 under the changes announced on 18 June 2026, which are implemented by amendment to the Qualifying (Category 2) Individuals Rules 2004. Category 2 status gives no entitlement to publicly funded schooling or healthcare. If you later need a Gibraltar tax residence certificate, the Income Tax Office may ask for evidence of presence and ties under its residence guidance.
