How do utility bills for electricity and water work in Gibraltar, and who supplies them?

Short answer

Water is supplied by AquaGib and electricity by the Gibraltar Electricity Authority (GEA, long known as GibElec), but AquaGib reads the meters and issues and collects the bills for both, which arrive as separate monthly bills. The salt water supply used for toilet flushing is paid through property rates, and there is no mains gas network.

Detailed answer

Who does what

  • AquaGib: produces and distributes potable water.
  • Gibraltar Electricity Authority (GibElec): generates and distributes electricity.

AquaGib reads, bills and collects payment for both water and electricity.

Opening an account

Contact AquaGib with identification and your tenancy agreement or proof of ownership. Ask for meter readings on move-in day and a final reading when you leave.

Your bills

Separate monthly bills for water and electricity, each with a consumption breakdown. Pay online or by direct debit.

Salt water and rates

Seawater for toilet flushing is paid through general rates, a property charge payable to the Government. Tenants should check who pays rates under their agreement.

Gas

There is no mains gas. Bottled gas is delivered by local suppliers.
