Is Gibraltar in the EU?
Short answer
No. Gibraltar left the EU with the UK. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026 its relationship with the EU has been governed by the UK/EU Treaty in respect of Gibraltar, which applies provisionally and removed immigration controls at the land border with Spain.
Detailed answer
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory outside the European Union. The UK/EU Treaty in respect of Gibraltar sets out special arrangements between Gibraltar and the EU. Under it, people can cross the land border between Gibraltar and Spain without immigration controls, and Schengen entry checks are carried out at Gibraltar's airport and port by Spanish officers alongside Gibraltar's own controls. Holders of Gibraltar identity cards and Gibraltar civilian registration cards benefit from exemptions under the treaty, including from the EU Entry/Exit System (EES).
