What should I do if I lose my passport in Gibraltar, and are there consulates there?
Short answer
Report the loss to the Royal Gibraltar Police and contact your own country's consular service. British nationals can apply online for a UK Emergency Travel Document, and several countries have honorary consuls in Gibraltar.
Detailed answer
Lost property is handled by the Royal Gibraltar Police at New Mole House or the Central Police Station. The reception counter is open Monday to Thursday from 08:30 to 15:00 and Friday from 08:30 to 14:30, and is closed at weekends. A police report is useful when you apply for a replacement document.
There is no British embassy or consulate in Gibraltar. British nationals who lose their passport can apply online for a UK Emergency Travel Document through gov.uk. A passport reported lost or stolen can no longer be used to enter Gibraltar, even if you later find it.
Holders of Gibraltar-issued British passports should contact the Civil Status and Registration Office at Joshua Hassan House, Secretary's Lane ([email protected], +350 20076945).
The UK Government's list of honorary consuls, updated in 2026, shows honorary consulates in Gibraltar for Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Thailand. Honorary consuls can usually advise on how to obtain emergency documents from their country's embassy. Spain does not appear on the list, and the Citizens Advice Bureau notes that Morocco has no consul in Gibraltar and directs visitors to the Moroccan consulate in Algeciras.
Nationals of other countries should contact their embassy in London or their nearest consulate in Spain.
