Can I visit the Northern Defences in Gibraltar?

Short answer

Yes, on a guided walking tour run by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust with Fortress Attractions Gibraltar. Tours are free, last about two hours and must be booked in advance.

Detailed answer

The Northern Defences, on the north face of the Rock above the town, combine medieval walls, 18th and 19th-century fortifications and Second World War installations spanning roughly 1,000 years. Much of the site was buried under rubble until restoration began, and public tours started in October 2015 after the second phase of work.

Tours have followed a route including the original entrance to the Villa Vieja, the Prince's Lines, the Retrenchment Steps and the Lower Union Communication. Research reported in April 2026 suggests the Puerta de Granada was mainly a military access point and that the Villa Vieja may have been a restricted defensive zone. Excavation is continuing.

In 2026 the tours have run on the last Friday of the month from 17:30 to 19:30. Published dates were Friday 30 January, Friday 27 February, Friday 27 March, Friday 24 April, Friday 29 May and Friday 26 June 2026. As at Thursday 8 October 2026, no later dates had been published, so check the Gibraltar Heritage Trust calendar for upcoming tours.

Entry is free, but booking through the Gibraltar Heritage Trust is essential. Wear suitable footwear and expect uneven surfaces, steps and exposure to the weather. Children must be supervised and visitors must follow the guide's instructions.
