What animals can I find in Gibraltar’s rock pools, and how can I explore without harming them?

Short answer

Gibraltar’s rocky shores hold limpets, crabs, anemones, starfish, sea urchins, small fish and periwinkles, as well as one of Europe’s best populations of the endangered Mediterranean ribbed limpet. Look but do not collect: taking marine animals is prohibited without a permit, and the ribbed limpet is strictly protected.

Detailed answer

Gibraltar’s rocky shores are full of life at low tide, and the Rock holds one of Europe’s most important populations of the endangered Mediterranean ribbed limpet.

What you may find

  • Limpets, periwinkles and topshells
  • Small crabs, anemones, starfish and sea urchins
  • Small fish such as blennies
  • The ribbed limpet: large, with heavily ridged edges, often high on rocks

Exploring responsibly

  • Go at low tide and keep an eye on waves and the incoming tide
  • Wear grippy shoes; rocks are slippery
  • Look but do not remove animals; replace any rock you lift exactly as found
  • Never prise limpets off rocks; harming the ribbed limpet is a criminal offence
  • Do not take animals, shells or seaweed home
