Where can I smoke in Gibraltar?

Short answer

Smoking is banned in enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces, including bars, restaurants and public transport, under the Smoke-Free Environment Act 2012. Outdoor areas are generally permitted unless signed otherwise, but all GHA hospital and care sites are smoke-free indoors and out.

Detailed answer

Under the Smoke-Free Environment Act 2012, smoking is banned in:

  • Enclosed or substantially enclosed premises open to the public, such as bars, restaurants and shops
  • Enclosed workplaces
  • Buses, taxis and other public service vehicles
  • All GHA hospital and care sites, indoors and outdoors

Open-air streets and terraces are generally allowed unless signed otherwise. In 2025 the Government consulted on further measures including a ban on single-use vapes, so follow venue signage on vaping.
