Detailed answer
The most recent census was carried out by the Statistics Office on Census Day, Monday 14 November 2022. It recorded a total civilian population of 38,196, made up of 37,936 usually resident people and 260 members of the families of UK service personnel. The figures exclude visitors and UK service personnel themselves, and include 552 people living in institutions or on boats.
Gibraltar's population has grown sharply in recent decades. The census totals were:
- 1981: 28,719
- 1991: 28,074
- 2001: 28,240
- 2012: 32,577
- 2022: 38,196
Between 2012 and 2022 the population rose by 5,619, or about 17%. Much of that growth was in the North District, which includes Laguna and Glacis Estates and the Western and Eastern Beach areas, where new housing has been built. Its population rose from 4,267 to 6,557. The reclamation areas remain the most populous part of Gibraltar, with 14,965 residents in 2022, while the village of Catalan Bay on the east side had 497.
Of the usually resident population, 29,072 held Gibraltarian citizenship and 5,511 were other British citizens, with the remainder made up of EU nationals and other nationalities. The census recorded 92 different nationalities living in Gibraltar.
The census also points to an ageing population: 7,155 residents were aged 65 or over, compared with 6,428 children aged 14 or under.
