What can I do on a Gibraltar cruise stop if it is windy or raining?
Short answer
Stay in town: the Gibraltar National Museum, Main Street and Casemates Square all work in bad weather. In severe wind the Upper Rock can close to visitors, and the cable car is out of service anyway while it is rebuilt.
Detailed answer
Gibraltar's weather is usually kind to cruise visitors, but strong easterly Levanter winds and Atlantic storms do occur, especially from autumn to spring.
What bad weather affects
- The Upper Rock Nature Reserve can close in severe conditions. On Tuesday 27 January 2026, for example, the Government closed the Upper Rock and the Alameda Gardens during a gale warning.
- The cable car made its last run on Tuesday 18 November 2025 and is closed for a full rebuild, with reopening expected in 2027. See how to reach the top of the Rock.
- Boat trips, including dolphin trips, may not sail in rough seas. Check with the operator on the day.
Good options in town
- Gibraltar National Museum, Bomb House Lane: open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00, closed on Sundays and public holidays.
- Main Street: largely pedestrianised, with shops and cafés along its length.
- Casemates Square and Ocean Village: cafés, pubs and restaurants close to the cruise terminal.
If the Nature Reserve is open
St Michael's Cave and the tunnels are underground, so they remain good options in rain. Reach them by taxi tour rather than on foot.
Check the Government of Gibraltar's weather warnings on the morning of your call.
