Can I visit Spain from a cruise stop in Gibraltar?
Short answer
Yes. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026 there have been no routine passport checks at the land frontier, so cruise passengers can walk into La Línea de la Concepción and back, provided they carry the documents their cruise line requires and leave plenty of time to return to the ship.
Detailed answer
The UK-EU treaty on Gibraltar was signed in Brussels on Tuesday 14 July 2026 and has been applied provisionally since Wednesday 15 July 2026. Routine checks on people crossing the land frontier between Gibraltar and La Línea de la Concepción have ended. Immigration checks now take place at Gibraltar's airport and port instead, where Gibraltar and Schengen checks operate side by side for arrivals from outside the shared travel area.
What it means for cruise passengers
Your ship's arrival is handled through port controls, and the document rules for that depend on your itinerary and nationality. Follow the instructions your cruise line gives you for the Gibraltar call. Once you are ashore, walking across the former frontier to La Línea no longer involves passport booths or queues.
Getting there
The frontier is at the northern end of Gibraltar, beyond the airport. Bus Route 5 runs between the frontier and Market Place, next to Casemates Square, and taxis are available in town. See also walking across the border.
Practical points
- Carry your passport and ship card even though checks are no longer routine.
- Customs rules on goods still apply. Check the tobacco and alcohol allowances before carrying purchases into Spain.
- The ship will not wait for passengers travelling independently, so check your all-aboard time and leave a generous margin.
- If you have a visa-required nationality, check with your cruise line before leaving Gibraltar.
