Can you walk across the border from Spain into Gibraltar?
Short answer
Yes. Pedestrians can walk between La Línea de la Concepción and Gibraltar, and since 15 July 2026 there have been no routine immigration or customs checks at the land frontier. Visitors should still carry a valid passport or, for EU citizens, a national identity card.
Detailed answer
The UK/EU Treaty in relation to Gibraltar has applied provisionally since 15 July 2026, and on that date the routine immigration and customs checks and the control infrastructure at the Gibraltar-Spain land frontier were removed. Walking across from La Línea is the simplest way to reach Gibraltar from the Spanish side and avoids queuing traffic.
The removal of routine checks does not remove the need to carry identity documents. The police on either side may ask for identification, and the Government of Gibraltar advises residents to travel with their passport and Gibraltar identity card when crossing into Spain.
