Which taxi queue should I use at Casemates, and what changes before 9am and after 7pm?
Short answer
Between 09:00 and 19:00 the Casemates rank runs two lines: one for Upper Rock tour taxis and one for city-service taxis doing ordinary journeys. Use the tour line for a Rock tour and the city-service line for an A-to-B trip; before 09:00 and after 19:00 Casemates is an ordinary taxi rank with no distinction.
Detailed answer
How the two lines work
Between 09:00 and 19:00, the Casemates rank separates Upper Rock tour taxis from city-service taxis. This applies as of October 2026.
Which line to join
- Tour line: for a tour of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
- City-service line: for an ordinary metered journey, such as to your hotel, the airport, the frontier or Europa Point.
Before 09:00 and after 19:00
Casemates is an ordinary taxi rank with no separate tour line. Take the taxi at the front.
Why the hours changed
The Government says the change accommodates the Nature Reserve's early opening and removes unnecessary restrictions outside peak tourist hours.
If a driver will not take you
No driver at a rank may refuse an ordinary fare. Refusing or neglecting a fare carries a £1,000 fixed penalty as of October 2026. See what to do if you are refused.
Tips
- If unsure which line is which, ask the driver at the front.
- Agree the price and sites before a Rock tour; ordinary journeys use the meter. See how Gibraltar taxis and fares work.
