Should I book a ship excursion or explore Gibraltar independently?

Short answer

Going independently is usually cheaper and easy in Gibraltar, because the town is walkable and Upper Rock taxi tours run all day. A ship excursion costs more but the ship will wait if the tour runs late.

Detailed answer

Gibraltar is one of the easier Mediterranean ports to explore on your own. The cruise terminal is roughly 1.5 km from town, a walk of about 15 minutes, and the main sights are close together.

Independent costs

  • The official Gibraltar Nature Reserve ticket, covering Upper Rock attractions such as St Michael's Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels, costs £30 for adults and £22 for children, with infants free.
  • The official booking site sells the ticket with a taxi tour option. Private taxi tours depart from the Gibraltar frontier every 15 minutes between 09:30 and 15:30, seven days a week.
  • Taxi tours can also be arranged in town, including at Casemates Square. One travel guide quotes about £50 per person including the reserve ticket.

Ship excursion costs

Holland America, for example, lists Rock tours of about three and a half hours from US$79 and US$99 per person.

The cable car

The cable car has been closed since Tuesday 18 November 2025 for a full rebuild, with reopening expected in 2027. Everyone now reaches the Upper Rock by minibus, taxi or on foot. See how to reach the top of the Rock while the cable car is closed.

Which to choose

  • Book through the ship if your time ashore is short, if you are anxious about getting back, or if mobility is a concern.
  • Go independently if you have five hours or more and want flexibility, and allow at least an hour's margin before all-aboard.
