Do cash machines in Gibraltar give out Gibraltar pounds or sterling?

Question

Accepted Answer

Cash machines in Gibraltar usually dispense Gibraltar pound notes, and some also give Bank of England notes. Gibraltar pounds are worth the same as sterling but are hard to use outside Gibraltar, so spend or change them before you leave.
The Gibraltar pound is issued by the Government of Gibraltar and is fixed at par with sterling. Most ATMs in Gibraltar dispense Gibraltar notes, although some also stock Bank of England notes. Both circulate freely in Gibraltar. The problem arises when you leave: Gibraltar notes are not legal tender in the UK and are rarely accepted in Spain, and UK banks and bureaux may not exchange them. Withdraw only what you need, use a card where possible, and try to spend remaining Gibraltar notes before departure. If you want sterling notes to take home, ask for them when paying in shops, as change is often available in either currency.
