Can I drive a Gibraltar or UK-registered car in Spain long-term?
Short answer
If you live in Gibraltar, you can drive your Gibraltar-registered car in Spain freely, provided it is taxed, holds a valid Gibraltar roadworthiness certificate and your insurance covers Spain. If you become resident in Spain, you must stop using a foreign-registered car there and either register it in Spain or remove it.
Detailed answer
If you live in Gibraltar
- Keep your Gibraltar vehicle licence and roadworthiness certificate valid (Spanish ITV does not apply)
- Confirm your insurance covers Spain
- Carry your registration certificate, licence and ID
- Display the GBZ identifier
UK-registered cars
Non-residents can generally use a foreign-registered car in Spain for up to six months in any twelve, with valid UK MOT, tax and insurance.
If you become resident in Spain
Your car should be imported, pass the ITV and be registered on Spanish plates.
After 15 July 2026
Frontier checks have gone, but registration still follows residence.
