Can I exchange old or withdrawn Gibraltar banknotes?

Short answer

Yes. Demonetised Gibraltar banknotes are still accepted by the Treasury Department of the Ministry of Finance at 206/210 Main Street.

Detailed answer

When the Government of Gibraltar introduced its new £5 note in 2021, it confirmed that demonetised Gibraltar notes would continue to be accepted by the Ministry of Finance's Treasury Department at 206/210 Main Street. This means notes that are no longer in circulation can still be exchanged for current money.

Gibraltar notes in general are issued on demand at par, one Gibraltar pound for one pound sterling, under the Currency Notes Act. They can be redeemed for sterling in Gibraltar or in London through the Crown Agents, although a commission of up to 1% may be charged, subject to a prescribed minimum.

If you are holding older notes, take them to the Treasury Department in person and check the opening hours before you go.
