How do non-residents get married in Gibraltar, and what documents and fees are needed?
Short answer
Non-residents marry in Gibraltar by Special Licence: you book online with the Registry, present original documents, swear affidavits before a Commissioner for Oaths in Gibraltar and stay at least one night in Gibraltar immediately before or after the ceremony.
Detailed answer
Booking. Ceremonies are booked online through the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs. Bookings stay provisional until documents are verified and fees are paid, so avoid booking venues or travel until you have written confirmation.
Documents. Each person must bring originals of a passport or national identity card and a full birth certificate showing parents' names. Divorced applicants need the original final divorce decree or annulment, and widowed applicants the previous marriage certificate and the death certificate of their late spouse. Foreign-language documents need a certified English translation. UK residents may be asked for a residence permit or share code valid for at least six months. Photocopies and laminated documents are refused.
In person. Originals can be submitted up to three months before the ceremony or on the working day before. Affidavits must be sworn before a Commissioner for Oaths or Notary in Gibraltar (at your own cost) and returned to the office before 1pm.
Proof of stay. By the day before the ceremony you must show evidence of at least one night's stay in Gibraltar, such as a hotel bill or apartment booking.
Venues. The City Hall's Mario Finlayson Gallery holds up to 30 people and the Mayor's Parlour up to 80. Approved outside venues, including the Rock Hotel, the Garrison Library and St Michael's Cave, are available on weekday evenings and Saturdays. You need two witnesses aged over 18 who understand English.
Fees (August 2026 guidance). Special Licence £124; Registry ceremony £186.50; outside venue £309.50; Mayor's Parlour venue fee £372 extra; certificate £37 each. All fees are non-refundable. No ceremonies take place at Easter, in the week before Christmas or on public holidays.
Visitors who need a Schengen visa must apply at a Spanish consulate for a visa for marriage purposes with Gibraltar as the destination.
