Does time spent in Gibraltar count towards the Schengen 90/180-day limit?

Short answer

Yes, for visitors who are not EU citizens or Gibraltar residents, including UK citizens who live in the UK. Since Wednesday 15 July 2026, days spent in Gibraltar count alongside days in the Schengen area towards the limit of 90 days in any 180-day period.

Detailed answer

Before the Treaty, a UK visitor's time in Gibraltar was separate from their Schengen allowance. It now forms part of the same rolling calculation, so a week in Gibraltar followed by a fortnight in Spain uses three weeks of the allowance.

Gibraltar residents are excluded from this calculation, and EU citizens are not subject to the Schengen short-stay limit. Overstaying can lead to refusal of entry on later trips.

Residents who were registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) in error may find the EU's online stay calculator showing their days running out. This happens because their exit across the land border is not recorded, so the system incorrectly treats them as still present in the Schengen Area. The Government of Gibraltar advised on Tuesday 13 October 2026 that anyone affected should request erasure of the EES record as soon as possible.
