What passport do UK citizens need to visit Gibraltar?
Short answer
UK citizens who do not live in Gibraltar need a full British passport that is less than 10 years old on the day of entry and valid for at least three months after the day they plan to leave Gibraltar or the Schengen area. These are the Schengen passport rules, which have applied to Gibraltar since 15 July 2026.
Detailed answer
No visa is needed for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, whether for tourism, business or study. Your passport must be:
- less than 10 years old on the day you enter
- valid for at least three months after the day you intend to leave Gibraltar or the Schengen area
Passports that fail these rules can lead to refusal of entry at the Schengen check carried out at Gibraltar airport. If you are unsure how the rules apply to you, the Gibraltar Borders and Coastguard Agency handles general travel enquiries and the Department of Immigration and Home Affairs handles immigration and residence matters.
