Is Gibraltar accessible for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility?

Short answer

Partly. The town centre is compact and there are accessible beach services and hotel rooms, but several Upper Rock attractions are difficult or impossible to reach in a wheelchair, and free access may be offered where sites are not fully accessible.

Detailed answer

Upper Rock attractions. The Gibraltar Tourist Board acknowledges that some major attractions have particular difficulty providing access for people with mobility, visual or hearing impairments. Because of this, the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Climate Change may provide free access. Contact ur&[email protected] or +350 20071648 before you visit. Visitor reports indicate that the interior of St Michael's Cave is not wheelchair accessible, while most of the Great Siege Tunnels can be managed.

Beaches. During the Official Bathing Season (the second Saturday in June to mid-September), a free Beach Accessibility Service operates at Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay and Camp Bay, with trained attendants, amphibious chairs, mobile hoists and sand walking aids. Changing Places toilets are available at Eastern Beach, Camp Bay and the Gibraltar Bathing Pavilion. Camp Bay has ramps down to the shoreline, and Blue Badge parking is provided at Eastern Beach, Western Beach, Catalan Bay, Camp Bay and Little Bay. The service can be pre-booked through the same contact details.

Hotels. The Holiday Inn Express and the Sunborn each have four fully accessible rooms. The Rock Hotel and the Eliott Hotel each have two, though both sit on hills. The Bristol Hotel has no accessible rooms.

Getting around. The Mobility Care Centre (+350 56175000, [email protected]) offers shop mobility support and scooter rental, and British Sign Language QR codes are available at several attractions, including the Moorish Castle and the Great Siege Tunnels.
