Can UK visitors get medical treatment in Gibraltar?

Short answer

British nationals who live in the UK can receive emergency treatment in Gibraltar by presenting a British passport. Some emergency cases are transferred to Spain, so the UK Foreign Office advises also bringing a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and taking out travel insurance.

Detailed answer

St Bernard's Hospital at Europort is Gibraltar's only hospital. A GHIC or EHIC covers medically necessary state treatment but does not replace travel insurance, which is needed for costs such as repatriation or changes to travel plans.

Visitors without an applicable entitlement or insurance may be charged for treatment in Gibraltar.
