How do I enrol my child in a school in Gibraltar?

Short answer

Government schools are open to children whose parents or carers are ordinarily resident in Gibraltar. Applications are made online through the Department of Education website (education.gov.gi), and the Department then allocates a place at the catchment school for your home address.

Detailed answer

The Department of Education handles enrolment for all Government nurseries and schools. Places are available to children whose parents or carers are ordinarily resident in Gibraltar.

Nursery and Reception

The enrolment window opens once a year, usually in late February or early March. For 2026/2027 it ran from 27 February to 20 March 2026. Children already at a Government nursery do not need to re-enrol for Reception.

Documents you will need

  • The long version of your child's birth certificate
  • Evidence of residence, such as an ID card or Permit of Residence
  • A recent local water and electricity bill

After you apply

The Department confirms your catchment school allocation. You can request a transfer to a different school at that stage. Late applications may be considered, but a catchment place is not guaranteed. Residency is scrutinised carefully.

Older children and mid-year moves

Contact the Department of Education directly via education.gov.gi. Private schools include Loreto Convent School (nursery and primary) and Prior Park School Gibraltar (ages 12 to 18).
