Is Gibraltar in the Schengen area?
Short answer
Gibraltar has not formally joined the Schengen area, but since 15 July 2026 Schengen border-check rules have applied at its airport and port under the UK/EU Treaty. This allows people to move between Gibraltar and Schengen countries without routine checks at the land frontier.
Detailed answer
Gibraltar remains a British Overseas Territory with its own immigration, policing and justice systems. The Treaty applies parts of the Schengen rulebook so that arrivals from outside the Schengen area are checked by Gibraltar officers and then by Spanish officers applying Schengen rules, after which they can travel on into Spain.
For visitors who are not EU citizens or Gibraltar residents, time spent in Gibraltar counts towards the Schengen limit of 90 days in any 180-day period.
