Is tap water in Gibraltar safe to drink?

Short answer

Yes. Gibraltar's mains drinking water is produced by desalinating seawater, then treated, remineralised and tested to legal drinking water standards. It can taste of chlorine, but that does not affect its safety.

Detailed answer

Yes. Gibraltar's mains water is safe to drink.

Where it comes from

All drinking water is produced from seawater by reverse osmosis desalination, operated by AquaGib. It is treated, remineralised and tested for chemical content and bacterial purity.

How it is regulated

Standards are set by the Public Health (Potable Water) Regulations 1994, which follow EU drinking water rules. The Environmental Agency carries out independent monitoring.

Taste and appearance

  • A chlorine taste or smell is normal and does not affect safety.
  • Brief discolouration from sediment usually clears after running the tap.
  • Chilling the water or using a filter jug improves the taste.
