Do I need to show my passport when crossing the land border between Spain and Gibraltar?
Short answer
No routine passport checks have taken place at the land border since the Treaty began to apply on Wednesday 15 July 2026. Travellers should still carry a valid passport or national identity card, because identity checks can take place away from the frontier and Schengen entry rules still apply to visitors.
Detailed answer
Schengen-style checks now take place at Gibraltar's external entry points, the airport and port, so the land frontier with Spain operates without routine immigration controls. Anyone who entered Gibraltar by air from outside the Schengen area will already have passed both Gibraltar and Schengen checks at the airport.
Gibraltar residents should carry both their passport and a valid Gibraltar identity card or residence permit, since a British passport on its own does not prove Gibraltar residence. A resident who cannot show the residence document may be treated as an ordinary British passport holder for Schengen purposes.
Because there are no immigration controls at the land frontier, crossings there are not recorded in the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). This has caused problems for Gibraltar residents who were registered in the EES despite being exempt, as the system can show them as still present in the Schengen Area. On Tuesday 13 October 2026 the Government of Gibraltar advised anyone in this position to request erasure of the record from the Schengen State that recorded their most recent entry or exit.
