What has Vox said about the Gibraltar treaty?

Short answer

Vox opposes the 2026 UK/EU Treaty in relation to Gibraltar, describing it as harmful to the Campo de Gibraltar, Andalusia, Spain and Europe, and in May 2026 it won a vote in a Spanish parliamentary committee calling on the Government to reject it.

Detailed answer

Vox is the third-largest party in recent Spanish polls. See our Spanish election tracker.

Vox's record on the treaty

  • May 2026: a Vox motion calling on the Government to reject the agreement passed in the Joint Committee for the European Union by 20 votes to 12, with PP support. It was non-binding.

  • In that debate, Vox deputy José María Sánchez García called the treaty harmful and a national disgrace, and argued it was contrary to the Spanish Constitution and should be ratified by every EU national parliament. The European Commission and the Council have rejected that view.

  • Thursday 1 October 2026: reporting summarised PP and Vox objections as sovereignty, the tax gap with the Campo de Gibraltar and the border control design.

The Gibraltar Government's response

Sunday 21 June 2026: asked about a possible future government involving the PP and Vox, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said any politician who tried to bring less fluidity and less shared prosperity would be foolish.

What Vox has not said

In the sources reviewed, Vox has not set out what it would do about the treaty in government. Its 2026 manifesto has not yet been published, and this answer will be updated when it is. Earlier manifestos of Vox had called for the closure of the border between Spain and Gibraltar, before it was removed on 15 July 2026.
