Detailed answer
Route The base station is at Grand Parade, near the southern end of Main Street and just off Red Sands Road, beside the Alameda Botanic Gardens. The line climbs to the Top Station at 412 metres, inside the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Before the closure the ride took about six minutes. What it was used for From the Top Station visitors have views south across the Strait to Africa, west over the town and the Bay of Gibraltar, and north over the airport into Spain. Barbary macaques are commonly seen around the Top Station, and it was a starting point for walks to St Michael's Cave and the Skywalk. The rebuild The cable car made its final run on Tuesday 18 November 2025. The operator, MH Bland, is replacing the stations and the cable car system in a project expected to take around two years. GBC reported that the new system is designed to be more wind-resistant, to carry up to 80 passengers per cabin instead of 30, and to shorten the journey from six minutes to about four. Reopening is expected in 2027, but no firm date has been published. Reaching the top of the Rock in the meantime Until it reopens, visitors reach the Upper Rock by licensed taxi Rock tour or on foot through the Nature Reserve entry points at the Moorish Castle, Devil's Gap and Jews' Gate. Entry to the reserve costs £30 for adults and £22 for children aged 5 to 11, with under-5s free. See the separate FAQ on the closure for the options in detail.
