When and where can I watch migrating birds in Gibraltar?

Short answer

The best periods are March to May and August to October, when raptors, storks and seabirds cross the Strait between Europe and Africa. Top spots include the bird observatory at Jews' Gate on the Upper Rock, the northern batteries in autumn, and Europa Point for seabirds.

Detailed answer

Gibraltar is one of Europe's best migration watchpoints, sitting at the narrowest crossing between Europe and Africa.

When to go

  • March: peak for black kites and short-toed eagles
  • April: greatest variety of species
  • Early May: honey buzzards peak
  • August: black kites peak on the return journey
  • September to early October: most other raptors

Westerly winds are best for raptors; easterlies push them further west.

Where to watch

  • Jews' Gate on the Upper Rock, home to the GONHS bird observatory, especially in spring
  • Upper Galleries and Princess Caroline's Battery in autumn
  • Europa Point for shearwaters, gannets and other seabirds
  • Botanic Garden and North Front Cemetery for smaller migrants

Follow GONHS for ringing demonstrations and EuroBirdwatch events in early October.
