Detailed answer

The name comes from the Arabic Jabal Tariq, meaning Mountain of Tariq.

It honours Tariq ibn Ziyad, who landed at the Rock in 711 at the start of the Moorish conquest of Iberia. Over time the Arabic name became Gibraltar in Spanish.

In antiquity the Rock was called Calpe. The Moorish Castle is the main surviving landmark of the Moorish period, which ended in 1462.
