Where can I ride and park an e-bike inside Gibraltar's Nature Reserve?

Short answer

Bikes, including e-bikes, may only be ridden on the roads the Nature Reserve authority has designated as permitted routes, not on footpaths or steps, and may only be parked in areas designated for parking. Entry to the Upper Rock is not allowed between sunset and sunrise without written consent, and normal opening hours apply.

Detailed answer

What the rules say

The Nature Conservation Area (Gibraltar Nature Reserve) (Protection and Regulation) Regulations 1993 define vehicles to include pedal cycles.

  • No vehicle may be used in the reserve except on permitted routes, unless the authority has given prior written consent.
  • Permitted routes are the roads specified in notices displayed in the reserve. They do not include paths.
  • Vehicles may only be parked in designated areas.
  • The authority can close or restrict roads and paths, with signs showing the area, the restriction and how long it lasts.

Breaking the regulations is an offence punishable by a fine.

In practice

Keep to the Upper Rock roads and follow any signs. Do not ride on the Mediterranean Steps or other footpaths: leave the bike locked up and walk. EBike Gibraltar's self-guided Rock to the Top and Rock Straight Up routes start and finish at its store in Ocean Village, and its free route maps can be downloaded for offline use. Its terms require riders to lock the bike through the frame to a permanent fixture whenever it is left unattended.

Macaques and safety

Feeding or disturbing wild animals in the reserve is an offence. Keep food out of sight and do not leave bags on an unattended bike. The roads are narrow and shared with taxi tours and other traffic, so ride carefully and give way to walkers.
