What are the age, height and cycling requirements to hire an e-bike in Gibraltar?

Short answer

EBike Gibraltar, which runs the premium e-bike and Nature Reserve package, requires riders to be at least 12 years old, at least 155 cm tall, no heavier than 120 kg and confident cycling in traffic. Riders aged 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult and show evidence that they can ride on the road.

Detailed answer

Who can ride

EBike Gibraltar's rental pages say its Riese & Müller e-bikes suit anyone over 155 cm tall, aged 12 or over and able to ride a bicycle. The restrictions on its Premium eBike and Reserve ticket package page give a minimum height of 5 feet (152 cm) and a maximum rider weight of 120 kg, so if you are close to either limit, check with the store before booking.

Younger riders

  • Riders aged 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult and provide evidence of proficiency to ride on the road.
  • Everyone aged 17 or under must wear a helmet. Helmets are provided free and are strongly recommended for all riders.

Experience and fitness

Riders must be confident cycling in traffic and of moderate fitness. Parts of the routes share the road with general traffic and climb to about 424 metres, although the motor does most of the work. The operator may ask riders to show they can ride competently and can refuse a hire. It does not recommend the package for anyone who is pregnant or has back problems, heart conditions or other serious medical conditions. The visit to St Michael's Cave involves a short walk with steps, and the activity is not wheelchair accessible.

On the day

Bring photo identification, such as a passport or driving licence. Every rider signs a waiver before the rental starts, and must not ride while affected by drink, drugs or medication. The customer is responsible for damage to the equipment, so check whether your travel or household insurance covers it.

The law

In Gibraltar, e-bikes that meet the specification in the Traffic (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles) Regulations 2023 are treated as pedal cycles rather than motor vehicles under the Traffic Act 2005, so the rules for ordinary bicycles apply. The age, height and weight limits above are the operator's own conditions of hire. See e-bike hire and tours in Gibraltar for prices and booking.
