How can Gibraltar card holders get an existing EES record deleted, including one created before 15 July 2026?
Short answer
Ask the competent authorities of the Schengen State that recorded your most recent entry into or exit from the Schengen Area to erase your EES record, explaining that you hold a Gibraltar identity card or civilian registration card and are exempt under the UK/EU Treaty. This applies to records created before Wednesday 15 July 2026 as well as those created since.
Detailed answer
The Government of Gibraltar set out the procedure in a Technical Notice published on Tuesday 13 October 2026, after consulting the relevant EU authorities. It follows an earlier notice on the same issue issued on Wednesday 23 September 2026.
Who can apply
Holders of Gibraltar identity cards, whether or not they live in Gibraltar, and holders of Gibraltar civilian registration cards. You have the right to request erasure if you were registered on or after Wednesday 15 July 2026. If you were registered before that date, you also have the right to request erasure now that the treaty arrangements are in place, using the same process.
Who to contact
The competent authorities of the Schengen State where your most recent entry into or exit from the Schengen Area was recorded. They are the data controllers for EES records, and the EU publishes their contact details for EES data protection matters. The Government of Gibraltar cannot remove an EES record itself.
What to send
- A request explaining that you hold a Gibraltar identity card or Gibraltar civilian registration card and that, under the Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom in respect of Gibraltar, you are exempt from EES registration.
- A scanned copy or photograph of your passport.
- A scanned copy or photograph of the front and back of your Gibraltar identity card or civilian registration card.
The Government has published a template letter you can use to start the request. You can copy your email to [email protected] so the Government can monitor its progress.
After you apply
Keep any confirmation or correspondence you receive from the Schengen State. If your request is refused, send the details to [email protected]. If the EES shows you as still present in the Schengen Area, the Government strongly encourages you to apply as soon as possible to reduce the risk of difficulties when you next travel.
